November 2019 Meeting

12/12/2019

Lots of lovely Show & Share this month!  From Scandi-inspired Christmas presents, to charity quilts in a lovely orange hue, and one project from way back in the day that made it's way from the unfinished pile.  Carol Krottendorfer also did a great presentation on Manx style quilting.  I was so busy learning I didn't grab any photos of that one!

On a very wild and wet night we had quite a good turn out!

Show and Share:
Lynn shared her Row by Row, Jungle themed quilt from another group.  Suzi shared her lavendar and gray themed baby quilt.  Another Sarah Bond quilt finish!  Mario's finished quilt. Julie's quilt had a very 1930's vibe to me, love those colors! Plus a sunny sunflower quilt!
Then we had some Member Demonstrations.  Madelyn showed us the "Curve Master" foot for ease in piecing curved seams like Drunkards Path blocks (I think several people ordered from Amazon them on the spot!), Mario talked about different strategies for Half Square Triangles, and Carol gave an intro and a parts list for Manx Quilting that we will learn more about at our November meeting.  Don't worry, a digital version of the handout will be included in the next newsletter!

I hope everyone had a lovely summer!

We kicked off our 2019-2020 season with a great first meeting.  In August we had Sarah Bond teach her "Strips and Stripes" workshop which was very well attended and a great class!  Several of our show and shares were blocks and one whole quilt already made up!  Check them out below.

Show and Share:

We have Louise who spent an estimated 450 hours! on her adorable thread painting, Mario who submitted his black and white mini quilt to a Curated Quilts magazine challenge, and a quilt for the Make Modern Magazine 5th anniversary.  Cindy and her square from Sarah Bond's class, Suzi with some baby giftst, Susie with her Sarah Bond block.  Deborah with her Sarah Bond quilt!  and check out the quilting on the back!  Maureen brough her completed Trinket by Allison Glass quilt and Robert brought several gift quilts!

Next, our past president, Kim Soper, gave a very informative talk on "How to Use Envy to Become a Better Quilter".  It spawned several very interesting discussions amongst the group.  Thank you Kim!

Hard to believe the summer is almost over!  Below are the meeting dates for the 2019-2020 season.  We generally meet on the third Wednesday of the month, but note that February has been switched to the 2nd Wednesday to avoid conflict with QuiltCon 2020.

This month we had great show and share, including more quilts with ribbons from Lynn.  Congrats Lynn!  Then we voted on our guild's contribution to the Eastern Long Island Quilters Guild 2019 Show  which took place on June 8th and 9th.  Congratulations Karen for submitting the winning quilt (center in the photo above).

Then we were very lucky to have Jeff Fender of Jeff Fender Studio bring a gorgeous table full of painting samples that he has done for Broadway, Fashion and entertainment customers.  It was very inspiring seeing all of the different techniques and results that mostly all started with solid white silk!  Thank you Jeff!

APRIL 2019 Meeting

Our April meeting was full of information and great show and share from our members.  Our president, Mario Mulea, gave a lecture on the origins and inspirations of the Modern Quilt movement, entitled "What Makes A Quilt Modern?"  From Denyse Schmidt, to the quilters of Gees Bend, to the power of the internet for bringing groups from all across the world together, tracing the roots of the modern quilt movement was fascinating.  He also shared a slide show of the winning quilts from QuiltCon 2019.  With 3 quilts each placing in 20 some categories, that was a lot of beautiful and thoughtful quilts!
Lorraine shared a lovely table runner that will be a gift, Lynne and Suzy showed us their ribbon hauls from the Smithtown Stitchers quilt show, Cindy had a baby quilt with some lovely free-motion quilting and how she customized a promotional tote bag with a lucky haul of trim from Suffolk County ReStore.  Maureen and Amy showed the results of recent classes they've taken and Maureen won some Machingers Gloves as our doorprize this month! Great work all and thanks for sharing!

March 2019 Meeting

Our March meeting was certainly jam packed with quilting goodness!  Above is the show and share from our talented members, including Kim Soper's quilt that was displayed at Quiltcon and the lovely label on the back that shares the names of all the women who contributed to the project.  Below that is a baby quilt that Louise Brogan made inspired by Kim's quilt!  Then we were treated to a lovely lecture and trunk show by local quilt appraiser Joyce Fischer.  She had so many interesting quilts, some dating from the 1840's!  Her talk covered things like what "cheddar" is (a particularly popular orange quilting cotton from the 1840-1890's) and why you should think about getting your own quilts appraised and how she uses certain colors or fabric combinations to date quilts.  And the importance of labeling any quilt you make!  I found the appraisal information very interesting, if you have a disaster at your house, an insurance company will typically only value quilts for the cost of materials or even less (and we all know the cost of materials is only one factor in the "value" of a quilt!  But if it is appraised to account for that labor and aesthetic value they will typically honor such appraisals for replacement costs.  Below are a few of the lovely quilts she shared:

February 2019

LIMQG had it's February meeting a week earlier than normal because SOME people are headed to QuiltCon this week! (Your faithful correspondent is not jealous in anyway, no sireee.)

Show and Share had some lovely pieces, including a Sonia Delaunay inspired quilt, a gorgeous rainbow quilt from Julie Okwit that she quilted on a domestic machine!, a bag using an "orphan block", and a very cheerful jelly-roll rug.  I see a Member Spotlight soon I think!

For this month's member spotlights, Lyn showed us the technique for her gorgeous and functional beach totes.  The secret is deer mesh from Home Depot!

Louise gave a lecture and introduction to her process for her gorgeous thread paintings.  It was so interesting to hear about her process and get close up looks at some of her pieces, including her very first one (which is so gorgeous you'd never believe that it was the first time she tried the technique).  One piece has the very clever idea of a pocket to keep the reference photo in, which might be a good idea for documenting other types of quilts if you have specific inspiration or info that you wish to keep with the piece.

Our March meeting will feature a lecture by Joyce Fischer, a quilt historian and appraiser who will lecture on 100 years of Quilting, and will be able to appraise 2 quilts for members.  If you have a quilt you wish to be appraised email Mario at [email protected] or Colleen at [email protected] as soon as possible.

2019 got off to a great start with our first meeting of the new year! Some great show and share from our members, including an adorable and touching baby quilt that remembers a firefighter Grandpa, a bag entered into a Moda challenge and Mario's mini that was included in the Curated Quilts Magazine.  Congrats Mario!

Mario also explained the challenge for the Eastern LI Quilt Guild show.  Remember, entries will be voted on in the May meeting,  Hoping to see lots of great interpretations of the beauty of Long Island!

We unfortunately had to some technical difficulties, so Kim Soper's lecture will be rescheduled for a later date.

The last part of the meeting was the swap for our Fabric Swap Challenge.  I can't wait to see what the groups of fabrics become!

We've got another gorgeous quilt this year!  Below are some images of the assembly of the quilt and as soon as the binding is on, we will share some pictures of the finished quilt before it heads to Quilt Con.  Thank you to everyone who participated.  Many hands make light work, even when the theme is "Tiny Piecing"!
